which clutch?

Post by beero »

It is time to reassemble the project and I want to fit a new clutch kit.
The problem is I have a 998 engine and a ribbed (1098) gearbox.
Do I get the 998 kit or will the friction (driven) plate be different?

If it's 998 - was it built using a 1098 block, and Mini pistons? The clutch depends on which flywheel is fitted - so 948 flywheel = 948 clutch, and 1098 flywheel = 1098 clutch........

Thanks for the quick reply BMC.
Sorry, spotted my mistake, I meant 948.
Original engine, replacement gearbox I think.

I think you will need a least 1098 backplate, flywheel and , clutch kit.

All the 948 bits should be fine - but try it all before putting in the car.

Thanks for that, will order a 948 kit tomorrow and just compare it to the old bits.
Going by the pictures on different suppliers websites it looks like the smaller clutch.

if you're just replacing like with like, ie: the engine had that box fitted before, then fit the clutch that looks the same.

if your clutch looks like this:

http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... hp?pID=189

then it's a 1098 clutch.

if it looks like this:

http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... hp?pID=186

it's a 948 clutch.

Thanks Chris, it is similar to the 948 but with 9 springs instead of 6.

With 9 springs instead of 6, I think you'll find that you've got a late 948 Spridget clutch pressure plate fitted- not a bad thing as it's meant to be a little stronger, but I believe totally interchangable with the standard 6 spring pressure plate type like the early Spridget and 803 / 948 Minors.

Got the new clutch today and it is the same, apart from the amount of springs. Thanks for your help everyone.
