Removing windscreen wiper arms!

Post by laneychief »

Having huge trouble taking the wiper arms off, I can see there is a retaining clip, when I hold it back do I just pull on the arms or lever with a screwdriver?

Thanks

Yes! They are a simple push fit onto the spindle. If they are stuck then careful use of a screwdriver can be of assistance.

As simmitc says, they are easy to fit & remove but are you trying to remove the entire wiper arm assembly or just the wiper blade with the rubber on? The entire wiper assembly should just pull off the spindle, although you may need to use something to lever it off with (if using a screwdriver be careful that you don't use too much force and end up scratching the paintwork!)

If you are only removing the wiper blade you just need to push down on the retaining clip through the small hole in the arm - a small thin screwdriver should do it - then just pull the blade part off. Then slide on the replacement blade until it clicks into place. Earlier cars have a different type of wiper arm but I'm assuming this is for your '69 Minor.

Hold the clip clear of the spindle with a small srewdriver. The spindle is splined so square up the end of the arm and pull it straight off the spindle.

Got the wiper arms off, can't get the chrome bits off that stick to the body, should they just pull off over the top of the spindle?

Yes, but you might need to lever them off with a screwdriver if they're difficult to budge.

I was afraid of that, they are stuck fast then and my screwdriver is just chewing them up and making it all worse.

So there's no trick to it, they just slide over the top of the spindle, and pull back off again?

Many thanks

How much force did you use? :-? When you say that the wipers "don't seem to work" what exactly do you mean? Have you now reassembled everything and nothing is happening when you switch the wipers on? If you could be a bit more specific it might help to identify what the actual problem is.

I can see the problem, the right hand side has pulled out of the bit that attaches it to the motor, not enough light for me to see where to plug it back into yet!

I am aware, I am an idiot and a complete minor catastrophe.

It doesn't 'plug' into anything....you must have used enormous force. It should have an expanded edge that is held under the lips of the wheelbox - you will need to loosen the screws securing the two halves together - insert the edge - tighten the screws. Access is not good - gloveboxes out probably. Catastrophe doesn't really adequately describe......

I was being stupid, that bit I was looking at was just the end of the inner cable at the opposite end of the motor side, just where it finishes up, it appears to be a power problem, the motor isn't doing anything when I flick the switch, I think something has shorted somewhere perhaps as it's just not doing it's job at all. The horn also isn't working and ive checked all my fuses and they are all ok, so Im not sure what's gone wrong, all I did is take the wiper arms off and the chrome embellishers, not with masses of force as with a bit of wd40 they slid off nicely, and it all seems to of gone mad.

Living in Devon, no wipers are a baaad thing.

I need a part for the motor can anyone help?

Inside the washer motor there is the plastic wheel, and on that plastic wheel there is the little peg where you put the arm over, I need either one of those or the whole wheel, can I buy these seperate or do I need the whole motor?? Heavy handed mechanic friend broke the peg, he shall be paying....
