Brake Pipes

Post by salty_monk »

The nearside rear brakepipe had already been replaced (with one of those ultra expensive nickel type jobs so I left well alone) & I replaced the other one with copper.

My question is this... the original steel one have removed was anchored to the axle with a metal strap (which broke on removal) the other replacement one was free & not anchored to anything (except each end...)

Question is... should I anchor them to the axle? (at the mo both are free).
If yes... at how many points & are cable ties suitable??

Cheers

Hello SM,

I have used cable ties, of suitable size, i.e. strength. I take it that the threeway connection is bolted to the diff, so a tie at each hub end and one between those ends and the diff would be adequate in my view. From memory I believe the original fixing was only at the ends.
By the way, copper brake lines need supporting at shorter intervals than originally used for the steel lines.
Alec.

For copper pipes - probably use 2 cable ties on the axle spaced at about a third of the way each. Copper is a bit more floppy than the steel, but I've never added additional supports, as there are twice as many as you needed for steel pipes.
