Can't find the post now but whoever suggested (Chris??) removing the rear nut from the trunnion after jacking on the suspension arm (to take weight off the damper arm) was spot on... Worked perferctly!
I got the top trunnion off & replaced the rubber all within about half hour....

By the way... Thanks for the gauge Mark, turned up today.... Now just have to make a mounting & connect it... Any chance of a sketch of how the bulb holder should look.... What do you think on using a sidelight & plastic holder from a modern car? The ones on my 306 look like they'd do the trick....

By the way..... had to bash with a copper mallet to move the trunnion the first few mm then got a spanner in there, then a wider spanner & then ultimately 2 spanners in order to lever it off the bolt. Quite simple when you know how!

Just to move it far enough over on the bush enough to get a spanner in there to use as a lever.
I levered against the plate/washer that sits between the trunnion & the damper arm.
I should put a picture up.... must be better than a thousand words as they say...

Anyway the gist of all this is I wanted to say thanks for the advice to whoever provided it..

It usually comes off OK without a bash though. The hard part is usually removing the old rubber bush - it can stick quite well after a few years.
