Grease Guns

Post by jennifer »

Can anyone suggest where I can get a decent grease-gun for the UJ's and suspension. Nobody locally to us in Surrey seems to stock or know of where to get one from, Cheers.

Hi Jennifer,

Not many high street shops sell these now (no call for them these days).

Try somewhere like Partco, the car spares company, there should be one local to you or try a search on-line?

Cheers

you can get them from many places, although I agree they're not often found on the shelf at the local hardware centre.
try screwfix.com (their cheap lever action grease guns are about a tenner including VAT) I use screwfix quite often because there is always someone at work doing some DIY and with a few people together there will easily be enough to get over £50 (over £50 gives free delivery :-D).Screwfix main business is via monthly catalogues and it's easy to order by phone if you prefer that to online. Their DIY stuff is often 70% cheaper than DIY centres.
Other than that there are plenty of tool companies that operate online or by phone, like machine mart and you may even find one with a local outlet.

Try http://www.toolbank.co.uk/

They have local stockists that will order for you. There are 10 listed in the surrey area.

There catalog has a least ten grease gun listed.

Toolbank are ideal for finding hard to find tools.

I just picked one up for a tenner from Halfords, pretty good too but comes with a solid pipe... luckily the also sold a 12" flexi pipe which is ideal for everywhere on the Morris.
I did the steering with 80/90W first, emptied & cleaned it & then went for the prop etc. All done today.....

Hello all,
grease guns are still widely used these days , not in the automotive world but in industry, so an engineering tools supplier will stock them.

I got one of those tenner jobbies from Halfwits. Seems good value, and I bought a flexi pipe at a show for a couple of pounds, which as Salty says, does everything you could want.

In fact, I bought a colourtune on Friday - Halfwits was the cheapest place I found it... I was even served by someone who knew what it was, and what I wanted it for - without reading the packet - they must be slipping!
Happy Minoring!

Don't praise them too much. On Saturday I serviced my Rover and the air filter I bought from them (£10.50) was 1/2" too wide, so I took it back with the original and asked their opinion and I got told that they fit!! Even though I was showing him evidence to the contrary! So I got my money back and went to a normal motor factor and got a proper FRAM one for £6.00 that fits! I spoke to the bloke in there about Halfwits and he said that I was about the 10th person that morning to complain about them!

Amazing.............. I mean how can they sell bits that just don't fit??

I popped in there on Sunday morning - It's funny how they sell Mig welders but not angle grinding disks. Surely most ppl who get a welder from Halfords will spend more time grinding the welds down that actually welding.
The 2 nearby DIY centres had run out of the ones I needed, so I ordered some from screwfix. 50p each is much nicer than £3.00 each.

I've not had too much problem with Halfords parts [Often the stuff in the Halfords box is the same as the name brand ones - it pays to open both boxes and have a look] However when it comes to getting the correct part for your car, you can be hard pushed at Halfords if there is a typo in their listings. They sold me an incorrect Battery for the 1989 Porker as the book listed the 1976 to 1980 version as 1976 to 1990. I was sure it was wrong but he was sure it was right so I had to exchange it the next day, and I picked the correct one using my Haynes manual and a tape measure.

My local motor factor will bend over backwards to make sure you get the part you want. (I had a long saga with Honda rotor arms and the guy at the local factor was extremely helpful - unlike other places we have mentioned ;-) )

One reason why I prefer my local Partco (Quinton Hazel) and just in case there are some posters that dont know they do sell to the public as well as the trade, and the prices are good.

Yes I think I will use my local factors more now.

In case anyone wants to know of two very good factors in the potteries area:

PMF (potteries motor factors) - Victoria road, Fenton.
Motormania - Trent Vale.

Both know their stuff and have been very helpful.
