Hi

I would like to change my gearbox in my 1959 948cc. However would like to put a 1098 box on that i know is in good condition. I have changed 948 boxes before but could someone advise on the additional parts I would need to put the 1098 box on to my 948.

Thanks in advance :D

The 1098 gearbox clutch housing is designed to fit the larger 1098 clutch. Not sure if it would operate the 948 clutch.

Golden rule is to use the correct clutch matched to the gearbox, so 1098 clutch (kit) on a 1098 box etc. You will also need the release bearing fork and gear lever off a 1098 box as they are different to 948 ones..... I would also advise fitting a 1098 backplate to the 948 engine to maintain the correct distance to the pressure plate.

PSL184- not being picky, but I don't think matching clutch to gearbox is the only thing to worry about- the 1098 gearbox and clutch combo will be fine, but they won't mate to the 948 flywheel!

Indeed they won't - one option of course is to also use the 1098 flywheel.... But I 'think' it may work ok if you simply use the 948 release bearing on the 1098 box -and all the 948 flywheel/clutch mech etc . But I'm sure someone who has actually done the job will be along soon.......

Yes, correct. I forgot about the flywheel. I've heard you can use the 948 clutch set up but I don't know for sure as I used a 1098 clutch to be on the safe side.

I have a ribbed gearbox on a 948 engine. I retained the 948 flywheel and clutch and modified the clutch operating lever. Check the respective projections of the first motion shafts into the spigot bush.
