front discs
i have just bought a morris and would like to change the front hubs to discs.i would like to try and do it myself and save money.then i would like to change to alloys.can anyone tell me how i start and advise me what be the best hubs to get,(new or second hand ones)

Changed mine to discs many years ago, it was pretty simple stuff as long as you are not a complete beginer. Bought mine as a conversion kit but a am sure others will advise on what other cars brakes can be used. Still have the original fitting instruction that I could scan and send if any use. You will need to consider a servo if going to discs. Wheels are not a problem as long as you dont go too wide and the stud holes are correct.

Discs are expensive - and even though they may be a straightforward enough fit, you also need to remove the master cylinder and modify it by removing a seal - and as above you will probably want a servo (which involves re-piping the rear brakes) and a remote reservoir for the fluid. Budget ~£600/800 for the parts, assuming you can do the work yourself. Best to avoid the kits with alloy hubs - the bearings 'have been known' to work loose....... For normal Minor motoring - the standard later 8" drum brakes in GOOD condition should be perfectly adequate. Consider going that way before rushing in to discs........

I agree entirely. I recently upgraded mine from 7" to 8" with brand new or NOS components; drums, Lockheed wheel cylinders, back plates, shoes and springs for around £180, it took me about two to three hours to complete, and the difference in braking is significant.bmcecosse wrote: For normal Minor motoring - the standard later 8" drum brakes in GOOD condition should be perfectly adequate. Your Minor might already have 8" brakes but could be in need of a service. What year is your Minor? The change over from 7" to 8" brakes was 1962, but the only way to be certain is to remove a wheel and drum and measure it.

You used to be able to buy alloy hubs that came in Minor, Marina, ford and undrilled (so you could choose the stud spacing), I don't know if they are still available. Refurbished ford sliding calipers appear cheap (as do the brake discs) all the time on e-bay (or buy secondhand and exchange at a motor factors). Something else you used to be able to do was buy the adapter brackets seperately (but specialist try to insist on selling kits these days). If the car is new to you I would say a brake overhaul including the master cylinder is to be advised so rebuilding the master minus the residual pressure seal would be all part of the process of fitting NEW front brakes.

I much prefer the look of that mounting plate - to the ? shape brackets some provide.

Excellent link - a great explanation of what can (and obviously DOES) go wrong! I don't like the taper roller bearings with no centre spacer - as used on the Mini (front and rear) they DO have a spacer in between, and the outer nut is torqued up TIGHT. They are excellent bearings when used in that fashion, but obviously all parts need to be machined to a high precision to make that work.

a8pte. I've fitted the JLH Minors kit to my pick-up retaining Minor wheel PCD and am very happy with the results. You can find JLH on the web. Cheers JC
