Huge Rumbling/Grumbling noise! HEEEELLLP!

Hey there, just had a new clutch put on my '67 four door and have just driven it home along the motorway at about 55-60mph, it was running smoothish up to 40mph, after this point a grumbling noise started coming from underneath. Over 40mph when you back off the acceleator there is a huge grumbling rumbling noise and the whole car shakes (enough to make the glovebox spring open), it goes again as soon as you even slightly touch the accelerator... when you touch the clutch slightly, you can feel a rubbling sensation through your foot as well, but this goes after you put it down more. Anyone had this problem before? please help! :( thanks :)

Sounds like something is causing slack in the drivechain, I'd suggest checking the tightness of the proshaft bolts first.

Or something coming loose in the new clutch...... But yes, my first guess would be the prop shaft falling off. Check it urgently.

Loose wheel nuts can also cause this! Try the easy fixes first. Or possibly propshaft 180 degrees out.

Don't panic, it is probably worse than you think!!
I agree, check the propshaft bolts first.
Shine a light through the inspection hole in the clutch housing and get someone to press the clutch pedal to see if it is operating correctly

Maybe the gearbox and engine are parting company - if someone hasn't put all the bolts in..... 8) or the starter coming loose if it's only held on with one bolt.......

Well, clearly the workshop have made a mistake, so get on to them, they need to put it right!

if you want a job doing properly - do it yourself.

Don't know if you have fixed this yet but I had a similar problem with a new traveller recently and on inspection it looked as though a flywheel bolt was loose - despite the lock washers - in the end I swapped engines and am currently rebuilding the original one.

Sorry for lacking speed in reply, have rendered the problem about 80%, the prop was 180 degrees out, the noise is still present (if not now VERY quiet in comparison) checked the wheel nuts and engine and gearbox connection, all seems to be fine, shall be checking the flywheel soonish... :) thankies for all your help! :D

Have you checked the diff oil? This will produce a low grumbling noise about under the back seat?

if all else fails it might be worth checking the springs in the friction disc
