Hi all, public liability insurance where to find what are the costs and do i have to have it, i will be entering two or three rallies this summer and on some of the entry forms it states that i have to have it, what do you think / advice,

The MMOC have Public Liability Insurance. I suggest you contact liz.saxon@mmoc.org.uk (Derby office) and ask her for a copy so you can enter the shows.

The insurance on your car should cover your needs.
Only if you are running a show would you need to buy Public Liability Insurance.

The organisers of the shows should have P.L. Insurance, if they do not then do not attend. They cannot escape responsibility by expecting the exhibiters to provide P.L.insurance. You should have normal motor insurance. If you set up a stand at an event then it would be wise to check who has responsibility for the stand.
Any event organised as an MMOC event should be covered by MMOC P.L. insurance provided that the organisers are paid up members of the MMOC.
Copies of the insurance policy can be obtained from head office.

Some of the rallies I have tried to enter have stated that you need Public liability insurance for £2,000,000

This is quite normal and acceptable. Public Liability is the same as Third Party; BUT - check with your insurer. Make sure that you describe the event correctly - a static vehicle display on a field is likely to be covered, a "rally" will to many suggest tearing through woods across country late at night, and would certainly attract an increased premium.

Marky is right! I'm involved in the Kent Branches HOP and yes, I can confirm that you only need public liability if putting on your own classic car show on, and that your own car insurance will cover your attendance of shows in your own car.

whilst that is correct, to ensure the event is actually covered by the MMOC insurance, it needs to be an official event - ie. event details have to be submitted either via events coordinator or direct to committee.
For a static show in a field it's a bit of a no-brainer but the guys responsible for the club need to be in the loop becuase they get part of the responsibility if something unexpected happens. The only thing that's been asked of for web rallies so far is that organiser/s are paid up club members, which is no different for branch rallies etc..
If I was to organise a "night-driving without lights" event I'd expect the committee to say 'no'. As a club member I may want to call it an MMOC event but without closing the loop I'd be leaving myself at risk.

Hi all, thanks for all the info on this issue and to let you know the outcome, i have talked to most of the people concerned in organising the rallies and the replies from most of them are that public liability insurance is is mainly for stationary engines / tractors and the like and as all vehicles will have to have there own insurance to be driven to and on the rally fields i should be OK to enter the rallies best regards Mikey.
