Hi all,
I have had a gold seal engine sat at the back of my garrage for at least 20 years and always thought it was a 1098, however there is nothing I can see to confirm this. The engine number is 8G162 R N35531, any suggestions on how to establish what I have.

All A-Series factory conditioned engines had an 8G prefix but the other numbers don't relate to the size of the engine so aren't much help. Are there any other numbers anywhere on the block?
This thread, showing how to differentiate between a 948 or 1098 engine, might be useful:

The 803 has a canister oil filter screwed into the block
The 948 has 950 cast into the block on the tappet chest side and a thin back plate with curved edges
The 1098 has a tag with 1100 on it on the same side of the block and a thicker cast steel back plate.
