Did you? If so, do you regret not spending some more cash for a pro finish?

I've been down to see the local Aston/Merc refinisher who said he'd do my topcoat for me in 2-pack but he says I'll need to remove any celly primer since it is a bu66er to sand down. It seems such a shame after I've got a decent finish so I'm wondering how good I could manage with Celly and a home spray. I guess I could always change my mind and get it re-topped after a year of drying out if the finish isn't quite right. How say the bretheren?

I've done a few cars myself with celly in the past. I always make sure I put enough on to take a good "cutting back" once the paint is hardened. I wouldn't trust myself for a show car but as a daily driver the finish was more than adequate.

Do it yourself in celly Rob.

I'm sure you could get a show finish with decent prep of the primer/ filler and a wet sand and machine polish once the top coat is fully hardened.

DIY! I've sprayed most of my Trav using a compressor and gun and it's not perfect, but then I did it all in a bit of a rush - but I have a mate who has resprayed his Austin 3 litre and his MGC using an old spray gun powered by an old vacuum cleaner -and the finish on both is absolutely PERFECT - gleaming deep gloss finish and not a run or a bit of orange-peel in sight. Avoid twin pack - it's horrible stuff......

If you think your neighbours can put up with a few days to a week of celly fumes..... then DIY. I was fortunate my dad was a professional sprayer, so half the battle was won. Just make sure it's a dry warm day (not hot in direct sunlight) with no wind if it's done out doors. Dampen the ground too as the compressor will just blow up all the dust!!

If you try and spray it in your garage, it could kill you- Isocyanates are very toxic. If it doesn't kill you then you could be left with permanent lung damage.

Sounds pretty horrid to me!

Plus the Minor looks more natural in cellulose. 2K is for professionals with air fed mask and a booth spraying more modern cars.

As above with the health risks - but it also has a rather 'false' sheen to it - and of course any future touch-up work is made very much more difficult. If buying celly - be sure to buy some extra and keep it well sealed up and in a 'cool' place - so you have stock of the same paint for any future repairs.

We've sprayed all our cars ourselves using celly. Bare metal and proper prep work. You get great results and a satisfied feeling you've done it yourself and saved a fortune (which you can spend on other things for the car). Plenty of light coats, build up the layers. Take your time.

I painted my Traveller in Cellulose and it won best modified car at the 2009 National rally so it can be done even in a single gararge. Take your time and spray when the weather is not too hot and humidity is very low. Preparation is the key. Good paint jobs are 99 % prep.
