Does anyone know the size of nut required for the tie bar?

5/16 Whitworth
although a 15mm metric may fit if I remember rightly

Keep a 5 ltr paint pot of assorted nuts and bolts and rummage through it until you find a nut that fits

You certainly can't just randomly fit a 15mm nut on the tie-bar....... You may be able to use a 15mm spanner, but it won't be a good fit........

Thanks all. I found an earlier post that suggested 3/8 bsf. None in stock in my paint pot so I'll need to send off for one. Even the local hardware shop doesn't have them.
Quite why I keep panel pins and loose, used stanley knife blades in my box of nuts and bolts I don't know.

Used Stanley blades seems like a good way of slicing your fingers.
All you get from hardware shops is metric. Never throw nuts and bolts away and strip them off anything that is going to be thrown away.

I recently bought a couple on ebay... these are the same as the rear damper arm to body nuts.

They are slightly slimmer than a standard castle nut. You can buy nylock ones from the usual Minor suppliers

In fact, at least on mine, it's an excellent fit. I changed the bushes at the weekend in the process of testing my homemade bushes and measured the nut in the process-15.2mm and my 15mm spanner is also 15.2mm. I have a list hanging above my workbench showing measuerd and calculated values of all my spanners- metric and imperial and always choose the spanner with the closest fit.

Yes the SPANNER may fit the BSF nut - but the question was 'what nut' and the reply suggested a 15mm nut could be used..which it can't........

There seems to be some confusion between nut/spanner sizes and thread sizes/pitches. The original question should have been "What is the thread size on the tie bar?"

Sorry to have caused confusion. The question should have been about thread size but I'm glad to hear that a 15mm spanner can be used. Sounds like a good fit.
