wired up temp guage no joy ,does it have to be earthed

It should earth via the temp sender.
if it's wired correctly - when you take the wire off the sensor and put it to earth the guage should read maximum. If that works then its probably be a duff sensor.
If nothing happens then something is open circuit.
If sparks fly then you've got a wierd problem.

Hello SR,
yes that sounds correct, the light green wire that feeds the fuel gauge should be used to feed a temperature gauge. The other terminal on the meter just goes to the sender.
As advised earlier, shorting the sender wire to earth should give maximum temperature on the gauge.

gauge dont move wen earthed alec ,its s/h could it be faulty - or tested, thanks mate, rite then the gauge didnt move wen earthed thru extended wire( female spade on engine), but did go to max wen ext wire removed and wires on gauge put across batt terminals, so try new wire ,if it goes to max then is it dodgy sender, i bought it new 4 months ago(sender), thanks for your help lads, if i have no joy ive always got me hammer ,steve

If you study the posts above you will see that the EARTH is supplied
through the sender unit, with a varying resistance depending on the
temperature of the water. If I read your replies correctly then
shorting the sender wire to chassis does NOT cause the gauge to
read anything. This does not point to a faulty sender unit, more likely
a fault in the lead from the gauge to the sender.

"The little green wire that feeds the temp guage".......is that from the little voltage regulator thingy -sorry cant remember its correct name !-----Iwas told by smiths that it will only support 2 guages . I'm wondering if steve has other guages linked to it as well??

I was told by smiths that it will only support 2 guages .
If thats correct where should any others be wired from ?

You can buy them from the people who now do the smiths gauges . Can't remember their name , but I got their name from google . The thing is called a voltage stabiliser ?Don't know if there are different out put voltages for different guages .I just told them the temp. guage I had and wot it was going on ,they sent the correct sender ,and the v.stabiliser . I'm a bit vague, cos it was ages ago!

ello boys, noticed feul gauge reading funny, sochanged v.regulator, both gauges working fine ,10 seconds later temp g; packs in again, need 2 try another gauge i suppose, steve

Or you could be overloading the voltage regulator...... assuming you have other guages try disconnecting one of them and test the temp sensor

hiya matt, no other gauges in use, just feul & temp, another new sensor this time from BM, it might have had a knock in the post, cheers mate

This 'little green wire' ,I assume is the output from one side of the existing minor v. stasiliser? Are you sure you are actually connecting to the right terminal there ?(Do other folks connect their guages succesfully to it ?) If it is hidden ,are you just putting your hand behind dash &connecting to it 'blind'? Just dug out v. stab instructions (obviously for an aftermarket one ),but they are quite emphatic about it being mounted so one terminal is above the other etc Have you moved your stabiliser? -prob not 'cos its sort of spot welded to the speedo casing? Looking inside a temp guage its easy to see why a knock to it could upset it -have a look there -sometimes the little pivots 'jump off'etc Overall I would say unless by some fluke there are a dodgy batch of senders out there ,it will be the guage !
