Wobbly Speedo Drive

I know this is not purley mechanical but did anyone notice the wobbly speedo fix mentioned in the London to Brighton article, has anyone done it and how successful was it and how was the nut tightened as I have not heard of this before.

Please tell me more ! I've got a wobbly speedo -something called 'cable waiver' apparently.?

Have a look in the current Minor Matters page 23 top right paragraph.
What you sre talking about I think is when there is too much oil on the cable, I will ask at my branch meet tonight to see if anyone has heard of the above solution from Phil.

Most cable wavier is caused by the way the cable inside wants to insinctively bend. Where a car has been standing or a drive cable has been stored coiled or bent, the cable inside forms to this shape (like when you tie two tree branches together - after a while, when you uncut them, they'll remain like that). When the cable is put into use cable opperates real smoothly when it is turned to bend roughly in the same position as the one it had formed to, but opperates with more resistance when it gets forced to turn out on it's curved form as more of it is wanting to get forced into the sides of the caseing. This, in all, causes a moment of easy spining and then a moment of harder spinning, causing an inconsistancy in its revolution speed.

If you've got an old speedo cable at home that hangs like a banana when held from one end, try it. Hold it at the top and, from the same end, spin the spline. You'll feel it go easy, then harder, then easy then harder to turn.

It says you can tighten the bolt on the back by removing the remote mechanism & going in through the top of the gearbox... & that you can't tighten it with a spanner....

What do we think of this?

Is play at the first motion shaft a good indication...??
if you have a good box and a box that is noisy in first - next to each other, then you will probably find more play in the input shaft on the noisy one.
Also if you put it in first and rotate the input shaft the noisy one will feel rougher.
However without another one to compare it too, then it's not a great way to check it.

Mr A series. A35's are notorious for erratic speedos ! Using your explanation,I wonder whether the cable route on a A35 is more contorted than on a Minor? I am sending my "new" round speedo (unknown origin,but suspect Midget) to JDO instuments for recalibration etc . The guy there says he will send me a leaflet on 'cable waiver'. So I suppose buying N O S cables is a bit dodgy due to the time they have been kept stored in a wound up position . I'll Let you know the outcome ............. ROD.

Sorry Matt,aint got a clue how to send a pic! Have now received back my re-done speedo . JDO say to remove cable inner ,clean off oil/grease and replace it ,apparently this will help the 'waiver' .Quite how I don't know!

I have heard of this before and I believe it needs to run dry to help effciency a bit like the shaft and bendix on the starter motor which should not be lubricated with anything but graphite from a pencil or the powder type (if you can get it) as using oil grease can give a sticky action.
