I've got myself an old Smiths oil and water temperature guage (Its under the name of Jaeger, but its Smiths through and through). Both imputs are capillaries.

I've got the water capillary attacthced, but it lost the bit for screwing into the engine block. anyone know where i can get a one from? also, should i replace the capillary tube at the same time?

The oil lead needs attatching.. I guess i need some kind of T junction (what dims should this be?) and a tube. anyone know where i can get this from?

Finally, i'll sort a bulb holder from ebay.

should make summer driving alittle less precarious, i feel like i'm playing with fire currently! If anyone has any of these bits, and would like to sell them I'd be really greatful. I know this has been posted many times, but as gauges varry i throught it best to post some picks and ask for help. Once i get the bits sorted i'm sure i'll be able to follow the intructions left in other threads.

nuts.. this shouldn't be in the electrical section.. i've miss posted. if anyone with power reads this could they move it to other, ta!

Also.. i'm worried that the unit may be beyond my repair abilities. isn't the capillary filled with a gas? may have made a serious blunder with this one!

Fraid so - the temperature capillary is filled with ether. It's useless without. Get yer money back!

sadly I wasn't that on the ball with it.. I (duh!) assumed the capillary carried water from the engine, and therfore could be replaced. Might explain why I got it so cheap think i'll give it the full star photo treatment and send it back onto ebay. the seller was quite hoenst about the condition and descitpition.. i just need to copy and paste. now to find one that already works

Best with separate gauges - these double gauges are always ubber expensive........

i was thinking that.. and if one goes wrong its not a pain to fix. how good are electric guages.. got my eye on an electric oil pressure gauge. I'm feeling a bit deflated after my last gauge so i need to get a goodun this time

Avoid avoid......... get proper gauges, although electric temp gauges seem to be reasonably accurate.

The Smiths version is available in fahrenheit, then centigrade and finally in cold/normal/hot, I'll let you decide which is best. My gauge has had many years use with no problems and only takes up the space for one gauge, leaving room for the ammeter and rev. counter. (Sorry but it was sitting in my spares box)

i've had many good purchases on ebay.. this time I failed. it'll go back to auction so someone who like playing with capillaries and gas can fix it. time to start hunting a new one

A Dual reading gauge with Water and Oil Pressure. They are both capillary inputs.

One, capillary, the Water Temperature is present but it needs a connector to the radiator takeoff, easy to get.
The Oil Pressure tube is not there but these are readily available and are standard fittings- just the same as a Morris Minor!

Cosmetically the Gauge is very good indeed. Crisp Gauge surface, clear and bright glass and a good
Chrome Bezel.

Standard 2" or 50mm if you are modern.

Offerred at a really bargain price , better to be used than lying in the garage.

It all sounded so easy.. i assumed (wrongly) that an adapter was all that was needed to fix to the block. I know the risks of ebay.. but what would others do.

is it missleading.. should i contact the seller? am i a numpty (yep)

It IS deceptive - the temperature capillary doesn't just need a 'connector' - far from it. It can probably be repaired , but not at an economic cost. The oil connection description is fair enough - and the parts to make it work are readily available and not expensive. The picture cunningly doesn't show the broken off end of the capillary tube.......If it was only a v small amount of money then it's hardly worth worrying about it. But frankly as it is - it's virtually worthless.....

hmm.. twentyish pounds! not fun for a student. might contact the seller but i suspect its a no hoper. thankfully a new oil guage is purchased

shiny! might be over priced (how do people increase they're bids at literally the last second?) but its made me happier

it might even work, and if not there always the money back offer. I've decided ot go for seperate guages. I've got work to do on the car for the next few year, and if (whilst working away) the capillary was broken at least it'll only be the temp gauge thats gone. now i need to find a matching, and working, temperature gauge.

well, my faith in people is restored. I don't think the seller realsied the complexity of the job, and has very kindly offered to refund the money. more than i expected from an ebay buy!
