My traveller is a 1970 model but has a plate relating to 1976.
I have been told by the DVLA thAt I need proof on headed paper from the club before I can
change the number.
Can anyone tell me how I go about it.

Is it an ex Military car - or has it been re-imported from say the channel islands?? I assume you don't get free road tax with that 1976 reg number ?

yes you will get free road tax as it is date of manufacture not date of registration that governs road tax... but you do need to tell / prove to the DVLA that the car was built before the tax free cut off date

Presumably the build certificate from Heritage will suffice ??

Logic would say so, however DVLA had so many problems with their V765 applications that they insist on owners club "official pre-approval" on the documents now.
For a reg date adjustment, they may well apply the same rules as the Reg-retention scheme. Personally I'd ask the club first, as when asking DVLA you don't always get to speak to someone who understands classic car rules and how they should be applied.
