Water pump at top hole leaking! Hi. Broke down. Where's front safe place tow point? The black bars behind the bumper/the rods?

Just top up the water and leave the filler cap off and drive away - not too fast - stop often to top up again. But if you MUST have a tow - round the tie-bar mounts as I have now told you twice via PMs!!

I dont go round the tie bar mounts - you are likely to bend the tie bars. Far better round the lower arm (i.e bar between lower trunnion and torsion bar)

IF you have a long enough rope..... But tied around the tie bar MOUNTS will be fine. Can't see why a tow would be needed for a water pump leak..... Surely in another thread - the breakdown was 'fuel pump racing' problem ?
Did you get home eventually ???

hi there. got a tow, got back ok, the water pump was steaming and losing water. changed the pump, a couple of old clips and it's all back together, running like a sewing machine again. the old water pump was finished, the impeller had just about come away, broke off, it was hanging on by a thread of plastic. i will post a picture of the old pump, i bet there was hardly any circulation and that showed up on a hot day and in traffic. there was a hole above the water pump, is this a pressure release valve or a safety valve to show that the pump has gone?
i think the performance is better too, and the mixture/throttle response, with good coolant circulation in the block.
would good/improved coolant circulation help the mixture and throttle response as part of the overall picture? can anyone explain?

There is usually a small hole part way across the bearing housing in the casting - I've yet to find out what it's for. It's not a pressure relief - that's done by the radiator cap.

I think its something to do with if the seal fails

I understand it to be where a grease nipple used to be. The hole still remains but not threaded as it once was.

here we go. eagle eyes will spot the little crack hole at the top left about an inch of the way in. cleaned up the engine bay nice, gave it a steam clean! good job there was only mainly water in there!

here's a pic of the inside of the pump. the previous one showed that the aluminium had perished and there was a hole there. this pic shows that the impeller had come apart and was spinning very poorly on the pump![frame]

That may well have been the cause of the problem in the first place!
The antifreeze also contains corrosion inhibitors and that looks pretty corroded! Also is it possible the crack was caused by freezing?
