Hi, Does anyone know where I can get legitimate chassis plates made for my midget? Moss used to do it if you took your mot/v5 but no longrer offer the service. Oity to use a grotty one on new paint. thanks

What would make the Moss one "legitimate"?
You could do it yourself with number punches, or even get it engraved, as long as the right number is on it I can't see any problem with the legitimacy.

you could get the plate made as a blank by a screen printers.
It might be worth speaking to the local police if you plan on selling the blanks because they might consider that accessory to cloning vehicles, or something similar.

Try the traders in club mag. For stamping, hand stamps don't always give a good result (especially in my hands!) - best option is an engraver (the people who do the plates that go on trophys etc..)

As far as I know, both types of chassis plates are available blank from the usual Minor parts suppliers. There are slight differences to stop them being passed of as legit, though the obvious newness does that anyway.
As for stamping them, I use a letter stamping set where you fit the digits into a tool holder, clamp them together tight and whack it one with a hammer. (Best to practice on a bit of ally scrap first!).
If you're using a separate letter punch set it should be easy enough to make up some sort of clamp to hold them all in a line (two small pieces of angle iron and a little G clamp for eg) or just practice.... Seen some original ones that have been a bit haphazard tbh, though most (certainly the car ones) were done very neatly - presumably they used some sort of jig or fixture.

Ive just done exactly the same thing on my parents mini.

Google Classic reproductions for the blank chassis plate or click on the link below, they literally sell all sorts of plates and decals for most classic cars. And then take the blank plate along with your original tatty plate along to a trophy engravers and ask them to copy the data over.

My engraver has done it for me twice now and he doesnt mind doing it. Ive told him what its for and he fine with it.
