Hi all, new to the forum.
So, where do I begin?
I have a 1965 4 dr which I'd love to see back on the road, just the small problem of putting it all back together and painting it etc, I have stripped all the old multicoloured paint off and removed the wings and have started to attack the inner wheel arches with sanding discs and wire brush cups and I've been left with some clean metal and quite a lot of pitted metal (and a fair bit of fresh air where metal used to be)
What should I do with the pitted stuff? I Don't want to sand any further and thin the good metal out, are any of the rust killer type potions any good and can you paint over them?
Also on the rear wheel arch the flange with the bolt holes is almost completely missing, which repair panel is this?
And this is the last question I promise, where is the best place to get the panels from?

I've obtained a few panel parts from ESM Morris Minors (google for them). The chassis leg replacement sections were a perfect fit, but I had some trouble with a couple of corner pieces from the bottom of the pillars - I just couldn't seem to get them to fit correctly and ended up using a lot of hammering and quite a bit of bog! Maybe my car is the wrong shape, though. ;)

As for dealing with those pitted areas... the grinder takes off too much good metal and doesn't get into the lower bits, and using a wire brush tool tends to polish the rust and leave a hard scale.

Sad to say I've only found one good solution: Sand blasting. I have a little gun and a small compressor, and it is slow and makes a huge mess, but works. It gets the hard scaly rust out of the lower parts of the metal without removing good metal.

I just sent my body shell off to a professional to have the underside done, and it was well worth it (although I haven't seen the actual bill yet!). I've put pictures of the results here:

I've yet to find a rust treatment product which seemed really effective, but there may be others on this forum who have suggestions!

Hi all.
Well it's been over a year since I last had a the time to have a proper look at the old girl but (with a lot of help from a mate of mine) things really look like there back on track.
John (my mate) has done some fantastic welding to replace both inner and outer sills, front and rear chassis legs and cross member and inner rear wheel arch.
The gearbox has gone off to be reconed and I'm starting on the engine tomorrow.
Hopefully, a few more months and she'll be ready for MOT.

Im going to try and attach a few photos if anybody fancies a gander.

While the sun was briefly shining today we managed to get her out of her tunnel to turn her around to start welding on the other side so I took the opertunity to take a few snaps.

Hi all.

We got her turned around to look at what we thought was the 'better side' to find it was way worse than we thought, after peeling off all the old MOT patches the floor, chassis, wheel arches where pretty much non existent.
But after really thinking there was no light at the end of our damp and soggy tunnel, not only is all the welding done but she's been primed and had a guide coat put on.
Can't believe that horrible grey rusty old rot box is finally starting to take shape.
The old English white looks amazing already, can't wait until its fully sprayed.

Thanks again to my good friend John, who without I'd still be scratching about with a wire brush.

I'm back in the restoration saddle after a long break, I've to sign up with a new username as couldn't get access with my old one.

So... The old girl is finally starting to take shape at long last, floor and chassis done, engine and gearbox done, and so the reassembly begins...woo hoo.

Hi all, Can't seem to get the whole photo thing working so I'm gonna try and add a link to YouTube.
We had to move the old girl from one place to another on the farm today and were determined she would do it under her own steam so with a screwdriver for a gear lever and only firing on three and the exhaust blowing we managed to get her going, I'm still smiling like a Cheshire cat now.
Oh and if any of you work for the HSE I wouldn't watch if I were you )

Well I never thought today would come, mertyle is finally in a position for a trip to the MOT station.
A couple of years of rust in the eyes, various wounds from disc cutters and welders and language that would make a sailor blush.
I was pacing up and down with my mate like a pair of expectant fathers.
Then the moment came......"All good mate, just an advisory on one of the tyres" WOOHOO!!!![frame][/frame]
