Engine Timing information needed

Hello,

I have recently finished dropping the engine and rewiring the whole engine bay in to my Morris, 14 months into a restoration project, and the timing information in the haynes manual doesnt look right ive been told.

Im running a 1098cc engine, unleaded petrol with Lead replacement in the tank.

Runs pretty well considering the engine hadnt turned in 14 years until I got hold of it! Just need to get the timing spot on to be happy with it.

Just get it running - then twiddle the dizzy until you get the smoothest idling. Then on a road test - listen for any pinking. If pinking you must retard slightly. If no pinking, then you should advance until you get some pinking - then retard so it's 'not quite pinking'. Worth checking that the vacuum advance unit is working as it should. Highly likely it is NOT if it;s been lying for 14 years......

best way to check the advance and retard is to remove the pipe from the carb end and suck on the pipe while the engine is running. you should hear the engine change its tone.

prepare to get used to the taste of petrol :lol:

The Workshop Manual says 3 deg BTDC, however all engines vary a bit, especially if they have been modified, you may have a different dizzy and the fuel will be different to what the engine was designed for. The published figure should be taken as a guide only.
