948 to 1098

Post by learyd »

What conversion's would be required to make a 948 car run a 1098 engine, i.e. and would you be able to keep the 948 diff?
Thanks

you would be recommended to change to the 'rib case' 1098 gearbox too. if you did want to keep the 948 box you'd have to re-use the 948 engine backplate, and flywheel.

if you go for the 1098 engine and box, it's as easy as 'lift old out, put new in'. engine and gearbox mounts are the same. you can keep the 948 diff but you'll have a car that accelerates very quick and doesn't go very fast on motorways. you can ofcourse change the diff to a later 4.22:1 ratio (as opposed to the 4.5 at the mo) but then your speedo will be reading wrong, in which case you would want a later speedo too!

The 948 engine will probably be the more economical. But as Chris details - it's a simple swap if you don't mind keeping the 948 box. Diff change to 4.22 would be wise - 3.9 even better.

You might also want to upgrade the front brakes to the 8" 1098 drums, rather than the 7" 948 ones.
