With the original braking system how far should you be able to push the pedal down before you get a good brake, mine is almost on the floor and the brake is only just good enough to stop. :-?

First visually check that all the wheel pistons are working correctly, then adjust the brakes and handbrake correctly. The pedal should now feel firm under foot with maybe an inch of travel. If it still feels soft, check if there is air in the system by pumping the pedal. If there is no air then the free play can be reduced by adjusting the rod on the front of the master cylinder. Care should be taken not to over adjust or the brakes will not release fully

Should be almost 'solid' - hardly moving down at all - after taking up the initial free-play.
