Hello, new forum member in Edinburgh.

I did have a 4 door that I bought as a rolling shell to work on over the winter http://morrisminorowners.co.uk/ftopic2255-0-asc-0.php , unfortunately I didn't get far with it (series 2a land rover got in the way) but have just bought this one instead. Which looks a much better project to start with.

Just drove it back from Helensburgh to Edinburgh. The drivers side spring sounds like the front hanger has come away and it was only running on three cylinders but just shows these cars just keep going.

I should have better luck with this one than the last one.

Now I am registered on here the full story has become clear, and the last owner was also a forum member.

I hope he hasn't been put off minor ownership as I am sure if he had this one sorted he would have been fine.

you DROVE it?! that rear spring has snapped, and the spring hanger appears to have rusted through, which makes for a very unsafe journey. the last owner sems to have split opinions on here, but that was the man himself ratehr than the car. which aside from the afformentioned looks pretty solid, though we were unaware it was running on 3.

Amazed you drove the car in such a dangerous condition, as previously mentioned one of the leafs off the spring was snapped and the spring hanger in a bad state. Both easy repairs.

Goodluck with the car. Driving it with no MOT and with that broken spring was a big risk - both safety wise and legally, I hope he gave you the two new springs that were promised !!

I bought the car and am quite happy with it, the seller told me I should check the spring and hanger for myself which I did. It was my choice to buy the car and not the sellers fault in any way. He didn't have the means or knowledge to sort it where as I do.

I thought I had best do something about this broken spring as the car has to be mobile for a while


The car came with two 7 leaf springs so set about fitting them


Easiest thing I thought was just to drop the rear axle


And have a good prod around to see if any metal was left at the spring hanger, there wasn't much left after the shoddy repairs had fell off


I had an old axle with telescopic shocks on it so tried it for size, I take it this is how it fits? and the bracket at the top just bolts to the floor?




Am I right in thinking this is a later gearbox from a 1098cc car?


The engine code is 10MA so i take the engine is out of a later car as well?

Most of the floors and sill areas have been "repaired" with the thinnest steel I have ever seen so they will be getting redone with proper panels and back to the right shape as it was supposed to be.

Sounds like youre quite capable of fixing the old girl up.

A quick warning... in your last picture I can see the old exhaust heatshield has disintegrated....... Its asbestos so I suggest that you carefully remove it and bag it up.

Yes..... you have a wee bit of work ahead of you! All fairly typical minor rust spots Im afraid though nothing that cant be fixed and most panels are available and not that dear. Chances are you will also find a few more once you start stripping away wings and things.

The gearbox does appear to be a 1098 one and that is the proper way to fit the new shock absorber mount.

There is a very good repair panel availbale for the spring hanger that comes complete with spring hanger and goes right out to the end of the sill. I have used this on about 4 cars.

the top bar for the shock absorbers (the bar that mounts to the body) has various holes in, so you can select your damper angle. apparently as upright as possible is best. i think there may be a set of holes further out (towards the wheels at the top) that should help things. but that's the least of your worries at the mo.

10MA is a 1098 minor engine too yes.

Thanks for the warning I didn't realize it was asbestos.

i had these shocks fitted to my minor. they were rubbish. i quickly got sick of them and switched to oil filled telescopic shocks which were mounted vertically inside the inner wheel arch.

the diagonal shocks with the bar as shown copy the morris marina approach, which was never any good and was rubbished by all who drove/ reviewed those cars from the start.

fit some decent dampers as soon as you can and you won't regret it!

isnt that the kit that apparently can break your floor in half??? i got told to avoid that kit by pretty much everyone looks like a nice project!!!

Welcome - nice to see she's going to be restored to her former glory. It was such a shame the last owner had to sell her, but I think he found the amount of work needed a little beyond him. Keep the photos of progress coming as this info always helps other posters with their projects

the car is looking good will be nice to see it on the road, hope the project goes well for you
