A daft little question perhaps but I bought a set of pressed aluminium plates from Tippers (before I twigged I could get them much cheaper from ESM etc!) and they are different styles. The rear is correctly shaped for the boot with no border, but the front has a raised aluminium border/frame. Is this the norm for a '63 Moggie or should I ask them to supply a front without the border?

It's up to you...... The rear one will be shaped/sized to fit the space on the boot lid.

My '56 has its original "Ace" plates and the rear is as you say shaped (no raised edges and rounded corners) but the front has a raised beveled edge and square corners.

The whole of the number plate including the edge is painted black, although most of the paint has worn off the raised edge. They have the riveted aluminium letters/numbers.

Sounds correct to me, I have a 1963 with original plates and it has a border on the front and properly shaped bootlid plates.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

Thanks all for the replies and also to David for posting the photos, which show exactly the plate styles I received. So all I need now is a front plate plinth (I've now realised the current plate is screwed directly to the plinth mounts) and suitable fasteners. What should I use for aluminium plates, do you think modern plastic fixers look out of place (I'm assuming the sticky pads are nor suitable for such plates and that I'll need to drill them to accept screws?)?
