removing heater hoses for flushing

hi there, before i start removing heater hoses for flushing, if the arm with the wire attached is pulled all the way out to the right, does this open the hot water circulation to the heater? i ask this because the cable is not attached to it and i will have to do this from the engine bay by hand to open up this valve.

also, i was wondering:

1 the front hose looks straightforward but
2 the rear hose looks like the rubber bit goes into some sort of chamfered bung into the pipe, is this right? how does this come apart? does this sound standard to you?

thanks!

Here's a pic of the heater valve (Ex Mini) which shows the cable connection and direction of operation. You can also see the hoses to and from the heater.
