Got up at 5:30 and left at 6 to go to the LCV register AGM, I got to Birmingham with 20 minutes to spare, had the meeting and then drove back to North Norfolk. A total of 390 miles, not bad for a pickup that hasn't gone further than about 50 miles in the last few years, all without any problems. It was bit scarey on the M6 but he managed to keep up a speed of 60 to 65 so not too slow. I had a speed limiter, if I went any faster the drivers side mirror started folding in

So your hard work the other day in the wet under your makeshift garage was all worth it then?! Know what you mean by moving mirrors at speed - our old LCV wing mirror would move but at about 30mph. I don't even like driving round Birmingham in our Volvo 740 estate so a big 'well done'from me for driving in style to the LCV Reg AGM up there.

you shouldve taken a trip through the tunnels under central birmingham. when it's not between 7 and 9am or 4 and 8pm on a weekday, you can get a good turn of speed, and a lot of echoes

Luckily the police station was opposite the house the meeting was in so I was free to go at the end of the meeting

MPG was awfull, first tank full 31.2 eek after a bit of carb fettling the second tank returned 39.7 will report when i fill up again today.

Tunnels sound like fun, i will have to look em out on my next visit.

if you've got the original 4.55:1 diff then you can get slightly better mpg with a 4.2:1 out of a saloon axle.
The disadvantage is load capability, but not so many classic LCV's are lugging their full weight these days ;-)

Mine was running a 3.7 with a clapped out 1098, which was fine on the open road / motorway / long journeys and around town but pretty useless on mountain roads as you'd be right down the gears.

Seconded on the underpass tunnels. They do sound nice with the right car. Though its a brave man that leaves his car in quinton!

Well third tank and it came out at 36.4 mpg. NO I WASN'T being towed, only got over 60 on the flat or downhill it slowed to 50 up the hills. Yes Quinton did look a bit dodgy but it was parked in the garden right outside the window so I felt it was fairly safe.

I have found a weep under the jet so will look into that on my day off, might explain the variable MPG as the plug colour was perfect.

Treating him to new dizzy cap,leads etc so I stand a chance of fitting a radio. He's still on original side entry and leads wich also means poor and sometimes no starting when its damp.

Hi Back last year I was out and about. I travelled aprox 95 miles at a very slow speed. I thought that any time now I would get pulled over by the Real Police and get done for loitering.......

It's possible that the first tank full consumption shocked you so much that you subconsciously drove more economically after that! Your consumption looks very typical - and much more realistic than the 'fantastic' 40+ mpg figures often quoted on here!

had 47mpg on my pickup with 1098 and 3.7 diff - this was on the LEO trip in Scotland. The mileage was checked with 2 other cars. It was running lean to the point of missfiring - 2 flats change on adjsutment took the intermittent missfire away and I got 45mpg.

This however was on long runs on open roads in the summer, nice and warm without lights or heater on and rarely doing 60mph. Around town and short trips - especially in winter were no where like that kind of mpg.
