Hi, just wondered if anyone can give me some advice i thought my front left brake caliper was binding but after an inspection today it seems fine. I have a marine front disk and caliper setup with a remote servo. After releasing the brake you get a whining fog horn type noise from the n/s front brake wheel area. The noise goes away after between 5-30 secs and does not return until you brake and then release again. I have removed the wheel and tried braking hard but the disk movement is totally free after releasing the brake i removed the caliper and checked its operation and all seems normal. This one is puzzling me has anyone got a clue?
thanks
Martyn

Martyn,
This could be due to a couple of things:
The pads are vibrating in the caliper - try copper grease on the pad backing & ensure any anti-squeal shims are fitted;
The caliper pistons are a bit slow in retracting (unlikely following your test).
Disc brake pads usually run in slight contact with the discs, which is why sometimes a brake squeal is present without braking & disappears when braking - pressure stops the squeal which is caused by vibration.
I don't know about the UK Marinas, but the ones here had anti-squeal/rattle shims fitted. Leave them out & the pads clunk badly when changing direction.
I assume the constant pressure valve in the master cylinder has been removed for the front discs

I'm not really sure how to tell if it's still fitted/working. I haven't delved too far into this side of it
.
I suppose it would be possible to hook up some sort of pressure guage at the brake switch pipe connection, but this may be impractical. Maybe if the switch was unscrewed & the front of the car raised so the switch was the hightest point, fluid would come out if under slight pressure.
If you have discs & they're not dragging (wheels getting hot without braking) then it's either not fitted or not working anyway.
If there isn't any other problem with the master cylinder & the brakes aren't dragging, then I'd leave it as is.
