Diffs

We run Minor 1000 diffs with our BMC axles with 180hp. But when modifying the diff to go into a Ford axle the support ears on the end of the bearing caps dont touch anything. Which theoreicly allows the casing to expand is this a known to be a problem?
Ie how inportant is it to locate the caps, They are not located on a standard Ford diff.
Would appreciate any input.

Had no idea the BMC diff would go in a Ford axle. Are the Ford diffs weaker ? But I wouldn't think it matters if there is any 'support' - I don't think they touch in the BMC axle. I assume you use Ford half shafts ? Do they fit the BMC diff - or do you fit Ford parts into the diff to take the Ford shafts.

Very interesting -
I thought Mallocks ran Ford diffs in BMC casings , with the BMC CWP fitted to the ford diff
Had no idea that they put BMC diffs in Ford Axles - WHY ?

I agree entirely Carl, I am certain I have seen a Mallock at a hillclimb with a Ford diff in the BMC axle casing, I thought they used A35 axle tube one side and Minor the other to get the diff offset? The ford diff needed a spacer between the diff housing and the axle housing to get the crown wheel centre right for the axle casing. I thought the lower powered Mallocks ran BMC diffs with the higher powered (BDGs) running ford?

Certainly early Mallocks had that offset diff as mentioned........ And if a Ford diff was used - was it fitted with BMC output gears to take the BMC splined half shafts ?

When using the ford diffs, I think they generally had specially made half shafts to match the diff rather than try to keep the BMC shafts.

The plans in a magazine I had years ago used the Ford guts plus the Morris crownwheel, pinion and casing with a spacer and a redrilled bolt spacing on the crownwheel. The halfshafts then have the ford end removed and the Morris drive flange sleeved onto the shaft and gas welded on.
