Any idea what engine this is from? I see it's designed to take an SU carb.

Any sign of marks in the casting like MOWOG?

Only two ports, but perhaps they divide into four inside the head/block? I'm not sure what's going on with the two small holes in the middle. I'll go and have another look at it later today.
I found it near a farmyard so it's possible it could be off a tractor rather than a car.

in case anyone didn't guess - the small bores are coolant circuit.

Is it made of bronze?
I'm wondering if it's off a marine engine.

It is off a very rare Roman Cataphract 4cc 2 cylinder engine.
A 3 stroke low maintenance engine requiring only a modicum of engineering skill to construct and maintain, these were the very first engines and only 6 are known to have been made. They were brought to the UK by the Romans circa 47AD by Ostorius Scapula who was quite active in the Burnley area at the time. these machines brought fear and terror to the ancient Britons.

The only writing I can find is hard to make out but appears to say "6368492 HDA2"

You're right, and the blob on top seems to be a control valve for it.
The smallest hole in the middle is a mounting hole. To access the head of the bolt/stud you would have to take the carb off and insert a socket in on an extension bar.

No, it's aluminium.

If it has a 6.5 in port spacing then it would fit a Series MM or Ford side valve engine. Inlets are siamesed ports.

Looks like about 7 1/8" between centres.

Don't think the Romans had aluminium ???

yes, but it was in very short supply so they preferred to use Adamantium

Actually Aluminium WAS a Roman I'm sure I read about him in a history book called Asterix the Gaul. Aluminium was a softy but his friend Titanium was a hard man.

That screws that theory then.
Should the measurement be in cubits or something?
