Wiper Parking

Hi,

Can anyone tell me which 'bit' controls the wipers to make them return to the right place when I switch them off ?

SHY's wipers currently stop in the middle of the windscreen - regardless of where they are when you switch them off :-?

I have a complete spare motor assembly.... but can I just change a capacitor or whatever it is :D

Hello SM,
there is a round raised cover on the wiper motor which has a wire connected to it. This is the park switch. It can be rotated if you slacken the main cover to reset the park position. The other way is to switch off, pull each arm in turn off the spindle and reposition them at the normal park position.

Nooooooooo! :o You'll get the wipers running on the bonnet by doing that!

You first suggestion was perfectly correct. The round cap with a wire on it has a circular contact inside - this contact powers the motor even when you turn the switch off. Part of the contact is cut away so that the motor stops running in 1 place when the switch is off. Rotating the round cap will change the position that the motor stops, therefore changing the position at which the wipers will park

Before slackening and moving anything use a marker pen or similar and identify the original position of the adjuster and gear cover. Just in case

Hello Ray,

you are quite right, I'm going to blame it on just finishing a 12 hour night shift and not thinking straight. The latter method works on my Triumph but that is a different design of motor with a fixed, non adjustable parking switch.

My apologies SM.

I did just that at the weekend, last in the line of jobs, just pulled off the old arms & fitted the new ones with new blades by eye... didn't get them on the bonnet though... am I just talented or very lucky!!

Hello SM,
it will work if the park switch is correctly set, otherwise, as Ray says it will wipe the bonnet.

My Morris doesn't have the park switch on the gear cover. Needs to switch off by hand in the lower position. Did someone use the wrong spare for my 65 Tourer? Can I change the cover (with a switch)? Or do I have to change the whole motor with gearbox?

theo the copper contact underneath the cover may not be making contact or missing

There is no copper contact underneath the cover. It's a plain one piece cover with no central part i could turn. Is it possible this was a model used in the earlier Morris?

Theo,
Sounds like it is an early one.

Ray, thanks. Will keep my eyes open for the newer version. In the meantime will ask the co-driver to take care of the "wiper-switch-on-and-off-timing" :D

How much would a new wiper-motor with gearbox cost?

Around £60-£70 exchange.

Yes, as far as I know, MM's don't park. None of mine park.

Theo's car should have the wiper motor under the bonnet which is different from the under dash MM type, which means either it's missing something or it's a motor off something else altogether :-? .
