Rollover

When I was a kid I remember my dad rolling cars onto their side on a bed of old tyres to weld underneath.
Anyone ever done this on their moggy?
How much manpower needed to roll it with engine/gearbox/interior/wings removed.

It can be done of course - but I suspect the thinner metal of the Minor may come to harm on tyres......I believe some have used an old mattress or two. But the real answer is a roll-over jig of some form. Some bolt to the suspension via the hubs - others fix to the bumper mounts at each end of the bodyshell - there is even one of this type made of wood........ Obviously the bodyshell has to be strong enough in the areas where the jig fixes. I think a shell without engine/box etc could be rolled over by 3 people - may be more difficult when rolling it back to make sure it doesn't land back on the ground with a bang!

Without engine & box I've done plenty of roll overs with 3 strong fellas. Raising the side up off the ground by a foot or 2 helps by reducing how much to bend over at the start of the lift.
My hub mounted jig (Grumpys type) needs to have legs fitted when it's fully over, so we normally used a 4th person to do that - however they don't need lifting power (i.e the wife/kid can do that part).
If you're patient you can find a jig second hand or even find one to borrow - most people don't use theirs all the time!

we made our own. well, we borrowed a friends and copied it. with my 2 door shell with everything stripped off it, i can roll it on my own! as RofL mentioned, it has legs to stop it falling on you, but it would only fall if you started wobbling it, they're more of a safety precaution. that's the case with ours anyway. we have rolled a complete car with it, but it took a lot of effort. using an engine hoist to get it up and over!

How many people did it take or did you just have an extra Wheatabix? (Other breakfast cereals are available)

If that is cardboard or carpet on the floor beware of setting it alight.

Yes it is cardboard on the floor and I damp it down when welding. It's there to protect the chipboard floor, which is also flammable! It took 3 men, when we raised it to a point where it was almost balanced I whipped round the other side to lower it. It is supported on a milk crate with 3 old foam cushions sandwiched with boot flooring ply to stop the foam crushing too much. The weight on the foam isn't that much, well the rear side window hasn't popped, I guess most of the weight is in the suspension.

It is back on it's wheels now, and only took two of us. I could have done it myself if I had let it fall back on to it's wheels but I thought better of it. (put me in mind of an old advert, anyone remember what it was advertising?)

Yes thanks, very well, one patch welded under the boot lock, no other holes found.
All the old underseal cleaned off and waxoyl applied.

Are Hub rollers foldable? Does anyone near me have one I can borrow? Would need it for about 5 days I need to clean up the underside, prime and seam seal.
