hi there, i have a smiths oil gauge in front of me, how can i tell if it's electric or capilliary?

it measures by kg/cm2 and says at the top, lb/(square)"

0-7
and
0-100

at the back ..

one hex shaped nut, two poles with screw down bits,
one bit that looks like a chimney with four lines cut out to enable a barrel thing pushed inside it, this thing has a short bit of 1cm black pipe coming out of the top of it.

any ideas?

As far as I am aware all oil pressure gauges are fed from a copper or plastic tube from the oil gallery on the engine. Electrical connections, apart from panel lights are for oil pressure warning lights.

Looking at the photo the top is the lamp holder for the backlight and the bottom is the oil pipe.

oh goodie. what do i need to do to put her on the mog?! where for the parts and how much should it set me back? is it electric or capilliary? should i get a smiths capilliary temp gauge or electric one to go with it?!

It would be wise to also fit the temperature gauge, whether electric or capillary, scaling to your choice either °C, °F or just C-N-H as in the second photo below. It's personal taste and the main thing is that it works. There are usually plenty on ebay. If you go electric the gauge must match the sender unit but can be adjusted with a cheap potentiometer if there is a mismatch.[frame]

Its capilliary, the long plastic hose is the capilliary. An electric guage would have a spade connector which would have a wire to a sender unit. The pressure acts on a diaphram which converts the pressure to a signal. The water temp guage will be electrical. the sender which screws in to the block as in the picture changes the resistance when it gets hot

Capillary temperature gauge is much better - but the capillary is quite fragile. The electric ones should be fed from the 10 volt supply on the back of the speedo - if that's what you decide to get.

Temperature gauge is electric and pressure gauge is capilliary

To test the oil - connect it to the engine !

you might be able to get a tiny reading by blowing into the pipe

bmw/c but if it's not working, would i get a load of oil shooting out everywhere lol.

on the oil gauge i have, that bit with the bit of broken off black pipe coming out, what do i need to do with that? is that the bulb holder, how do i connect that up? cheers!

If you want to keep your dash neat there is a dual gauge, oil pressure/water temp fitted to MGBs and MG Midgets. Search on ebay for "mg dual gauge" to give you an idea of what they look like and how much they cost.

It's the bulb holder and you may need to prise it out with a tiny screwdriver if it's very tight-otherwise it just pulls out.

You can of course go electric - it's just a bit more vague - but good enough to indicate any overheating. The Mini parts are fine -just connect to the 10 volt stabiliser on the speedo.
