I've been having real problems with the clutch slipping - it transpires that this was due to the thrust bearing being in constant contact with the clutch mechanism.

I've re-adjusted the clutch and the slippage is now a thing of the past BUT the clutch pedal is not springing back up to the top of its travel (its about 2" from the carpet) and can easily be pulled up to the normal position and stays there. I wondering if theres another spring somewhere that I've managed to dislocate or something similar.

Any ideas?

(just for clarification, the return spring that acts on the thrust bearing arm is in place)

you say that the return spring is in place, how much effort does it take to extend it when hooking it into place? You should have to put a fair pull, if not it's possible the spring is too weak.

It would be worth checking the condition of the bronze bush and rubber in the housing on the side of the chassis, I have known these to wear badly and begin to jam in the side of the housing.

Another thing to check is that the pedal mechanism is free where it goes throught the chassis leg. Lift the small inspection plate above the brake master cylinder and check that the brake pedal is free where it shares the same shaft.

Bronze bush and poly (not rubber) are in tip top condition, having only been fitted for about a fortnight. Where is the return spring located? Is it a gearbox cover off job, or is it accessable from underneath?

It should be underneath - hooked on the rods that operate the clutch. I think you just found the problem.......

That's it - should pull the clutch back up after you remove your foot. Is the spring strong enough ? Or is the pedal seized on the shaft extension from the chassis - or indeed, just jamming on the floor and/or carpet ?

What's the condition of the clevis pins and steel strips that connect to the relay shaft? There can be quite a bit of slack in them as they wear badly due to road grit getting in them and the return spring is on the clutch side so won't take out the slack. I just replaced mine at the weekend and the pedal's a lot more direct now.

I've also had a weld break on the relay shaft in the past which gave a lot of slack but the clutch still worked (just).
