Many possibilities - up to Rover V8 if you wish. The question is - how deep are your pockets?

Without too much alteration - you are pretty much restricted to moving up to a 1275 A series engine - which can in turn be modified up to ~ 1400cc if you wish..... I think the Fiat Twin Cam engine (1600/2000) goes in relatively easy - and has been a standard conversion for many many years. But there are some very successful diesel engine transplants around - which give performance AND fuel economy. Best of both worlds!

whilst reading the vizard big yellow book of goodness, i noticed that with a big stroke billet crank, and a massive overbore, you can get a 1275 upto 1596 :o i dont know if anyone makes billet cranks for RWD setups though, probably more for FWD applications. could be a bit unreliable though...

a zetec or suchlike can be done 'without too much alteration'. can be a pricey mod, and ofcourse, if you do the engine you need to up the stopping and cornering to match. i'd suggest you talk to JLH if you're interested in that route.
