rattling steering column

Post by philip »

Morris runs beautifully after recent engine works.I am the chap whom Charles Ware paid for labour after athe cylinder head they supplied failed. Has had for some time irritating rattle to do with the electrics in the steering column. There are available felt pads to stop this I believe I did it once, years ago. obviously not very well. I believe it means the steering wheel off, anybody know what size the large nut is?

If the felt bushes have become dry, then try oiling them - the felt absorbs the oil, swells up, and reduces rattle. It's a lot easier than stripping the column. Most column rattle stems from unbalanced front wheels.

Or 33mm - all much the same.... Be sure to leave the nut on, but loose, when you first jerk the steering wheel to get it off......

33mm may not fit but it's a tolerance thing. I use a 34mm 1/2" drive thin walled socket and it works fine. Disconnect the battery or you could end up with the Bryan Adams effect-"Waking up the neighbours"

Depends how badly the nut has been mangled in the past by the 'hammer & chisel' method

I like the sound of oiling the felt pads and wondered about it, how do yo gain access without stripping it out?

Take the wheel off - and dribble the oil down the shaft!
