Valuation

I know it's difficult to put a value on cars over the internet, but I was wondering if the good members of this board would be able to give me a rough guestimate as to how much Maggie is worth? I'm not considering selling it (ever!), but I need to know roughly how much it's worth for another purpose.

She's a 1969 4-dr Minor 1000 saloon, white (Old English I think?), all standard apart from the discreet addition of a radio. Basically she's in pretty good condition and has always been 100% reliable in daily use. Regularly serviced by myself. She's had quite a bit done to her over the past few years, including having the nearside rear floor replaced a couple of years ago, and new front suspension legs and trunnions 18 months ago (at great expense as these were unavailable from suppliers at the time). Within the last few months she's had a new battery and exhaust. I re-strapped the seats about 3 years ago. The underside is mostly very solid, with a few exceptions which I'll go into below. At some point prior to my ownership she's been resprayed to a reasonable standard on the outside.

As far as bad points go, the main ones are a few bits of the bodywork that need attention. The offside spring mounting bracket is crumbling and will need repairing before the next MOT. The very back of the boot floor has rusted through along about a 6 inch length, but it seemed to pass its MOT in this state about 6 months ago. The rear wheelarches are starting to go into holes along the top edge, but likewise passed the MOT. There are a few bubbles appearing on the wings, but it's still very presentable. Mechanically, the rear springs are quite saggy and need replacing fairly soon. At some point in the future I'll need to replace the front brake drums as the adjusters are almost fully on, despite there being plenty of shoe material left.

What would a good valuation for such a car be, bearing in mind that I've probably made it sound worse than it actually is? It's a reliable car that still looks good, in need of a few small repairs here and there. Let me know what you think! Thanks.

i'm no expert, if i was buying/selling i'd expect £2000 or there abouts.

if it's for an insurance valuation, maybe a bit more.

I would be quite upset if I paid 2k for that, imho with that amount of rot I would value that at no more than 1k

With that rot.....£500 maybe £600 on a good day.

Chris - What exactly do you need the valuation for? If it's for insurance purposes most insurance companies ask for a 'professional' valuation from someone who's inspected the car rather than a 'guestimate' that's been obtained over the internet. The Club can provide a list of agreed valuers from within the Club & the trade - contact the Derby office for details.

The rotten bits you mention could be just the tip of the iceberg and sound the alarm bells for whatever may be lurking elsewhere.

i paid 2.2k for mine, and unearthed a lot more! (ok i probably should have paid 1.5k max)

my guesstimate may have been wrong but at least it sparked some interest for the OP!

The problem for me is - with that amount of rot, there is probably more waiting to be discovered - it it can't get a new MOT with that rot, which is a 'golden rule' when buying a Minor unless buying as a project.

It's not a valuation for insurance purposes that I'm after, but a more realistic figure. My guess was somewhere in the region of £1000, but it seems like the consensus is on the lower side of that.

I know this car very well having driven, maintained and repaired it for the last 3 years. I'd be very reluctant to part with it and buy something else instead, as I tend to take the view that it's better the devil you know with old cars, especially towards the lower end of the market.

Well - get stuck in and fix the rot! Sorry if I/we gave lower than expected estimates - but, rot is always difficult/expensive to fix - and that IS what sets the value........

I'm not complaining in the slightest BMC, I would rather people speak honestly!

Personally I'd say somewhere in the ~£600 region.

From the outside it looks a very nice car. If that rot was fixed it would be worth more, obviously.
