Wiring Front Flasher/sidelights??

Please somebody help!

I've just bought some new flasher/sidelight units, and the only wires on the back are green, for the indicator, and red for the sidelight.

The wires from the body are green, black and red.

I can't get them to work!? Sometimes just the sidelight flashes, and I don't know whats going wrong! Occasionally it pops a fuse when I try different combinations!

Help PLEASE!

Hello Laneychief,

green to green, red to red and black to the body of the lamp. (Assuming a metal body, otherwise black goes to the exterior of both lampholders.)

Thank you Alec.

I will try that tomorrow when I have some light (I don't have a garage, very weather dependant this morris restoration)

I will let you know how it goes.

I've got the RH Flasher going (not the sidelight though)

But I can't get the LH to do anything, no response at all.....

Very confused and frustrated, I'm a newbie at all this mechanics stuff as it is, and electrics definitely aren't my strong point!

Test with a meter (Maplins - v cheap) to see if there is power at the cables.

The Sideflasher on the edge of the wing on LH side is flashing meaning theres power, and the wires seem to be going from there towards the front flasher, so why won't it flash!!!!

Hello Laneychief,

not only do you need power but the earth must be good as well. You say you have no sidelights either which points to bad earthing of the lamp(s). A simple trick is to connect a piece of flex to the battery earth terminal and touch the lamp bodies. If they work then it's the earth, if not then it's on the power side.

Ok, So a piece of wire on the earth on the battery, to the lamp bodies, should make them light, both the sidelight bulb and the indicator?

And if they don't its a power problem, but if they do it's earth....

What do I do if it's earth!?

Thanks for being so useful!

Hello Laneychief,

if it is a bad earth, clean all earth connections. As the new unit doesn't seem to have an earth terminal, connect the black wire to the screws that hold the lamp to the body. Just be sure its a firm connection. Coat it with vaseline or similar will help prolong a good connection by keeping corrosion at bay.

ok, I've tried cleaning all the earth connectors, they're gleaming, but still exactly the same response, RH flasher works, LH doesn't, No sidelights AT ALL.

I did that test with the wire to the earth on the battery, and the lights didn't light up, does this mean it's a power related problem rather than earth? I just don't understand why my side flasher on the edge of my wing is working but the front one won't go at all?!

What in the world.

as you have glass wings, you wont get an earth through the fibreglass to the body (which is what the -ve of the battery is connected to. you need your black wire from the lamp to connect to the inner wing. this should work!

Working!

Cleaned up all the earths and both flashers started to work, also found a sneaky little inline fuse for the sidelights that I didn't know was there...........

Thanks everyone for your help!

Hello Laneychief,

that is not uncommon, often there is more than one problem at a time.
