given the choice, what do you go for and why?
new old stock or something that has been made quite recently?

This subject crops up in many posts, but usually as an aside rather than a direct question. Genuine NOS usually comes out favourite. Why? Consider Chrome: The original lasts for 50 years, the modern stuff shows rust after less than two years. I've known a faulty NOS rotor arm, but many have experienced problems with the modern ones. There are a few exceptions with things like tyres where old ones could be past their best.

Is it possible some nos brake shoes contain asbestos? In which case always new!

the modern linings are however not as good...
obviously you don't want to inhale the dust (even more so if it's from old linings). Asbestos was mainly a problem for the people who were in contact with it regularly, and it also depends on the type of asbestos.

Indeed! The old asbestos ones do have more bite. finally found a set for the front of the Land Rover and can now dip the nose on heavy braking with no servo... Older Minors with 7" brakes are allways worth fittign with old stock brake shoes if you can find them. You get really good responsive braking.

Have to agree there - the modern 'compressed camel dung' linings are useless - good old asbestos linings work well.

One bad experience of NOS, a carb minus it's piston spring, a bolt & a loose inlet tube. A likely explanation was it had been robbed & thrown back on the shelf years ago.
