Midget Disc Conversion

Just a thought, i know 9 inch wolseley drums are obviously far superior :lol: but i've got a midget lying around that i'm going to break for spares, and i'm wondering how easy it is to fit the midget discs. i've never come accross this mod (i know it's done a lot, but i've never seen how). are there adapters? or does the midget everything bolt straight on? i know the minor wheel bearings and the midget wheel bearings are the same, so do the hubs just go straight on?

i keep thinking i should upgrade from the drums on my everyday minor, and it makes sense if i've got the midget bits lying around to do something with them.

any advice?

I have been considering this conversion and have had the bits lying around for a while, well the midget bits atleast. This thread may be useful http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... sc#p356113
As you can see you require a spceial J bracket to attatch them, and like any other disc mod to remove the (top hat?) seal from the master cylinder. But doesnt seem to complicated at all other the getting the bracket made.

awesome. thanks! there are drawings for the brackets, with dims. so i could knock them up easily if i go that way. i had just read everything in the Custom & Modified section (i was bored!) and hadn't spotted any mention of them. didnt think to try the 'search'!

indeedy. might make a few sets :wink: i'll talk to the oracle (daddy!) and see if he thinks it's a good idea. he'll probably give me the 'midgets are much lighter and their brakes aren't designed for the weight of a minor' speech!

The Spridget discs are too small - just about as good as 8" drums and certainly NOT as good as 9" W drums....... However - you can fit vented discs and different calipers using the basic Spridget hub and that does seem to be almost as good as 9" W drums. :-?

i can't persuade my dad to relenquish the drums off his 1500 :lol: or the diff for that matter!

maybe i'll just flog the discs and hubs when i flog the other midget bits. i'll mull it over!

Keep them handy - Richard (islipminor) is very pleased with his vented conversion and will I'm sure tell you all about it!

i imagine the only difference between vented and non vented is cooling. you will still get the same stopping power, unless driving very hard, surely?

and i've got minilites, which should keep the brakes cooler than the steel wheels would, i'd imagine.

been stripping the midget down a bit, and had a look at the brakes. i notice they aren't floating single piston calipers, they're fixed twin pots. so the whole set-up is quite wide. my minilites are already as far out as they can be without seeing tread above or behind the wing (with a 1/4" spacer to clear the top trunnion), does the midget set-up space the front wheels out much?
