what size period replica battery should be used in 1950 MM, I have been quoted two sizes ?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

The largest battery that will fill the battery box and fit the clamp. The extra capacity is always useful.

The BMC service manual lists:
Lucas BTW7A/I
12 volt 43 amp-hr. at 20-hr. rate.
