I was wondering though how easy they are to fit? Any pictures of cages in cars would be good. And who makes or made them?

looks pretty nice, i imagine it's not too hard to fit but would need a few holes drilling!

it's a bit far for me too i do fancy making my own, but i'm sure someone will come along and say 'what do you want that for? it's more weight, it'll slow you down'

Just the rear will be easy to fit. It is a bit more awkward when you have to fit the front and connect them together though.

But you wouldn't fit it unless you were gonna rag it around a track......

Looks like it may be a bit difficult to wiggle into a saloon.......it is only a rear bar . I wouldn't drive an open-top car without a roll over bar. This one is said to be by Alley (it is of course John Aley)- as is the one in my TR7. My rally minis had roll over bars - but my ultra-light racer did not - and it's the only car I have ever rolled..... Fortunately no harm to self and very little to the car either!

what was the lightweight racer based on? mini or minor? i only ask in case it was minor, would be interesting to know how a minor faired with rolling when being driven... enthusiastically... we've all seen youngcampers dads traveller that rolled in the bad weather, but i imagine that was a fairly low speed affair.

also, i guess insurers put up their price if you've got a roll cage, as you may aswell say 'i plan on rolling this thing one day'.

I have the exact same one in my 4 door at the moment. It is made by Alley Bars (now Safety Devices, Cambridge). I'm not too sure what happens with my insurance as it is a safety feature so should stay the same. I can tell you now that it was a b*****d to fit. I had to remove the rear bench seat (this was going anyway), both front seats, the gear stick and even one of the rear doors. I am modifying it to accomodate removable door bars for the front doors. A great investment for someone close by.

So you haven't informed the insurance company about the mod yet then ?

Oh no nothing like that, but take a look at my signiture pic . I will inform them of the mods (well, most of) when the car is road werthy again. I wonder what they would say about the cage? As modern cars technicaly have a roll cage, it's just built into the structure so is hidden from view.

I only mention it as my young (18 yr old) neighbour fitted one to his Saxo and the insurance went up around £300! They see it as an excuse to drive faster and hence less safely.... even more so for younger drivers I presume.....

If it only went up £300 for a boyracer saxo, then on a classic policy morris insurance shouldn't make any difference I dont think it made any difference to my brothers mini insurance.
I was almost tempted to make one for my van, but didnt have a tube bender when i did the restoration.

a roll cage will advertise to car theives that the car is not standard and must bit quicker so more likely to get stolen

This looks the same as my one good bit of kit fits like a glove in my 2 door bit of a squeeze to get in let alone getting it in a 4 door

My one has no markings on it to establish where it came from but that's kinda the standard design so all of these prob look similar
