I went for petrol today, the fuel cap hadnt been off during this cold spell and the damm key broke in the lock

The boot lock was also frozen but thankfully wasnt locked. So be warned, go round all your locks and give them a squirt of WD40 to hopefully stop they freezing up.

Or push in some vaseline! It's rather better/longer lasting at keeping the water out.

This could lead to some interesting looks at the fuel pump

You could have warmed the cap up with the heat from your hand, to break the key you must have used quite a lot of force on it.

No Marky very little force was used. I believe yesterday it was -9 in the afternoon here when it happened. There was solid ice all around the cap. At least it was only a petrol cap and not a door lock as this would have been so much more difficult to sort.

Fair enough, maybe the cold made the key brittle.

If the key was old it could have just been metal fatigue.
