Re: Ford Sierra Type 9 Gearbox
to go straight into a standard 1098 you will need:
bell housing, prop shaft, clutch spinner plate (with ford splines), speedo cable, gearbox crossmember and rubber mounts (old one won't do), new floor cover as metal one has gearstick hole in wrong place, you will probably need to cut about 1 inch further towards your handbrake out of the floor to clear the tail of the box but apparently depending on tolerances you might get away without cutting.
you also need to decide if you're gonna stick with a linkage clutch or change to hydraulic. with using the standard linkages you will need a bracked to go onto the side of the box to act as the pivot for the relay shaft.
i've probably missed something but those are the biggies!

not at all, mg midgets have the same backplate pattern as a minor so the bellhousings you buy will fit, but a marina has a different backplate so the bellhousing wont go straight on.Alex'n'Ane wrote:Still an a series i presume and basically the same engine so exactly the same!
if you've got a marina engine you can fit a midget backplate on then you can fit the 5 speed, or you can fit a modified minor one. the modification is necessary as the minor has small main bearing diameters than midgets or marinas, so you need to open out the middle of the back plate where it goes over the crank webbing.
you also have fun with flywheels, as midgets are generally a 6 bolt fitting not a 4 bolt like a minor. i think a minor flywheel will bolt onto the marina engine no problem (stress the word 'think' don't quote me on it!). if you have the midget engine it will have the midget 6 bolt flywheel. this takes a small clutch size so you will need a different sized clutch plate with the ford splines, and a new clutch cover (the minor cover wont fit the midget flywheel).
you can get a midget flywheel redrilled (ACCURATELY!) to take the 6 bolt fitting meaning you can then use the minor clutch assembly.
simples!
