I have seen mention on this site that black stains on Traveller woodwork can be removed by treating them with bleach or lemon juice. Some say that lemon juice is both effective and kinder to the wood.

Can anyone shed some light on exactly how the lemon juice is used to achieve the best results, please?

I know it sounds obvious Don but use fresh Lemon Juice and not the bottled or squirty stuff for pancakes.
I have used it and depending how dark it is it can take a few goes, the good thing is that you dont have to take all the percautions that the bleaches require, when I used it I just put it on with a brush and when dry cleaned it with a damp cloth before applying some more.

As it happens, I have a large lemon tree in the back yard. Consequently, I have about 100 lemons sitting on a kitchen bench at the moment.

I'll need all the timber restoration tips I can get--I have a second-hand set of timber that I am trying to restore for a rather sad traveller I recently imported. I have read the tips at the top of this section, but any further tips would be gratefully received. Unfortunately, most of the products used in the UK for preservation and finishing aren't available here in Oz. But then as the climatic conditions are very different, I suppose different products might be required.

If the wood stains are really dark and lemon juice won't shift them try a wood bleach (applied with a brush) Be careful not to get any on the paint though as it can mark. Leave it on for a few minutes only, and carefully neutralise after with water.

I have tried the lemon juice treatment. It doesn't seem to have much effect, even after numerous applications. Perhaps my lemons aren't acidic enough.

When you say 'wood bleach' do you mean one of the preparations based on oxalic acid, or are they products based on chlorine or peroxide, similar to domestic bleach?

Oxalic acid - just make sure to mask your paint well and really wash the wood well after use to remove any trace before re treating the wood with varnish/stain etc.
