I've had conflicting opinions re the requirement of a elec fan in place of the original/or plus the original. Anyone got any thoughts on this

Hello Racer,
an electric fan saves a little power and the risk of catching your hand on the engine driven fan when under the bonnet with the engine running.
I runa 2.5 PI Triumph with an electric fan and it is rare for it to actually switch on. Just in heavy traffic in summer.

Thenks for that Alec.Next question!- because the kits are so expensive,is there a cheaper alternative, that ACTUALLY works correctly? Over the years on various cars,I've used breakers yard obtained ones ,with varying succes, taking into account correct shrouding ,thermostatic controls etc

I thought newer A+ powered metros had some sort of electric fan ?? Maybe the gta's or something ? I would have thought one of those would do the do.... although electric ones fit on the front and push the air don't they ? There's not a lot of room behind that grill is there? :o

I did the electric fan conversion on a 1275 mini and barely noticed the difference (apart from the noise / vibration) Power wise it didn't seem to do much :-?

Hello Racer,
yes, you can get fans etc from a scrapyard. Just pick something of a matching engine size. Power wise I doubt if anyone will notice a couple of BHP in driving. As I said, unless you are in a lot of stop go driving, it will probably hardly do any work as forward motion puts far more air through the radiator than any fan.
From that point of view I don't believe an additional electric fan is a cure for an overheating car, as some people seem to think.

Our Metro (998cc A) has an electric fan, mounted behind the radiator, so it might be something to look out for...

Our allegro had a similar set up, in the same place as the minor one only electric and it was fine.
