Dont want to get too excited but I may have aquired a LWB Landy for £150 quid, Its diesel, a runner, new exhaust and tyres but no brakes. Have been on to a chum of mine and he has told me where to look for corrosion on the chassis so tommorow is the day I go for a crawl underneath with a hammer. Pictures posted come daylight.

That is a very good price for a runner. LWB 2.25 diesels are very slow, at least it will make your Minors seem sporty!
Chassis rust is easily repaired on them. The whole body comes off so you can get to it.

Series 3 Landies are very easy to repair. The brakes are a simple drum system. 150 quid is very cheap for one though so don't expect too much. The chassis and bulkhead do rot badly but the whole car is easy to dismantle. 2286 diesels are not very lively by any means, 50mph is a realistic maximum unless fitted with overdrive, but they are perfectly useable and quite good on fuel. Talking of fuel, the tanks for LWB Landrovers are very expensive so check that.

One other very important point, Landies are fantastic fun to drive!

Agreed that's a good price for a runner, although the 109s seem to be worth less than a comparable 88. As above, it'll make your Minor feel like a sports car! I've got a '76 SWB 2.25 petrol (not on the road at the moment) and it's the slowest, thirstiest, worst handling, most underbraked car i've ever driven. Great fun though

Check the bulkhead and chassis for rot. Luckily if the chassis is really rotten you can always just buy a new one, although they're not cheap!

I got my 88" 2.25 diesel for £500 with 6 months MOT - (ebay gamble)
The MOT turned out to be dodgy, which wasn't ideal but I was planning to give it a good once over before going through North Africa in it. Replacing outriggers is ok, if the chassis rigers are good - i.e. you should factor in for twice the reapir you expect!
Mine got new springs as the existing ones were choked solid with rot. One of the new springs went flat after a week offroading in Mali

I found out after a couple of months in the UK that it had high ratio diffs (Range Rover?). This did not cause any problems in the Africa sand and donkey tracks but made a massive improvement on the long haul tarmac runs from blighty to Western Sahara.

The downside of the high ratio was using it in the UK for 6 months, the desperate lack of performance up hills - although it could get over 60 downhill and could get nearly 30mpg if driven carefully! If you live somewhere hilly, I don't recommned it - if you do long drives on the flat it is a blessing.
I also managed to use a load of waste veg oil in the UK and got very used to the burger van smell

Do the gutters drain into the chassis?

Actually it looks OK to my untutored eye, if some measures had been taken to stop it rotting after it was repaired the fist time, the second repair wouldn't have been needed.

looks nice and bulkhead appears solid i used to get 25mpg max check the swivels.The turning circle on a landy is terrible but its a great fun easy to repair vehicle

Weight and drag from the HUGE gearbox/axle components and the aerodynamic efficiency of a house don't help!

having had a landy with a knackered chassis, it looks pretty solid. could do with a derust and a paint, but thats a job for warmer weather. the first pic, the patch looks like its been pretty badly welded on, best to whip that off, clean it up and pop a new one on. the others just show the seams of the chassis is self from the looks of it.

For £150, that looks pretty good! You'll be glad of that brake servo, without one the brakes are extremely heavy. Looks like you're not too far off an MOT .

most SIII owners were shocked at my 30mpg - I guess the high diff ratio made a big difference.

I guess with the current extreme weather its going to be a good investment for Norfolk in the snow.
