Sump Bolts

Tomorrow while she is up on stands I plan to drop the sump and replace the gaskets. Quick qestion: Do I need to take extra care re-tightening the sump bolts? Should I use some spring washers?

When I replaced the timing cover recently I stripped one of the bolts with what I thought was pretty light pressure. Do I need to be just as careful with the sump bolts?

If you look in the manual there should be a recommended torque for those bolts. That should avoid any problems.

It's a very small torque, 'nipped up tight' - yes you should take care - and there should be spring washers on them - on top of the elongated flat washers.

Pardon my ignorance but I assume the spring washer BETWEEN the flat washer and the bolt head?

Yes, between them, I'm sure, & the manual would seem to confirm.
I've always presumed that the purpose of a spring washer is to prevent the bolt from vibrating loose...perhaps someone could confirm or deny this?

Yes - as I said above - on top of the flat washer - and then push the screw through!

Roy - what the OP means is when fitted, the spring washer is

underneath

the elongated washer next to the bolt head. I know what you meant when you said 'on top' but in a very-litteral-sense that would only be correct if the engine was upside-down (e.g. if you had it on an engine stand, oriented to fit the sump from above)

Personally - to make it easy - I would place the spring washer ON TOP of the elongated washer - and then push the screw through - and then fit it into my socket ready for screwing into the engine block! Simples?? I thought so........
