i am having a bad dasy and now......
at low speed (3rd gear type speed) my petrol pump sounds like it has taken a shed load of coke and is going 10 to the dozen. Performance seems ok. but all that rapid pumping is scaring me.....

Well it's working which is good.
Has anything been changed or disturbed?
I'd suggest a visual inspection of the whole petrol pipe starting from the tank and looking for any signs of leaking which could be brown stains or suspiciously clean places.
Very odd that it only noticeable under those circumstances, are you sure it's the pump?

Either it's flooding (usually obvious at idle) - or sucking air - or the diaphragm is wrongly adjusted. Just possible there is a massive vacuum in the tank - and it can't suck the fuel up to the engine! Check it out.
