Can i remove gearbox of a 1958 cope morrie 1000 with out taking the whole motor out. Will it just lower from under car once bolts are removed from engine thanks russ

It can be done but it takes a whole lot longer, gearbox cover off, crossmember off, i still had to undo the engine mounts to move the engine foward a bit, i still manage to damage to bellhousin of the gearbox,( broke the two top bolts off)

It will need to twist quite a lot to clear the rack.
Take anything like hoses and heater valve off to allow the engine to tilt back as much as possible.

Don't let the gearbox hang on the shaft, and be prepared for it to be quite heavy and awkward if you are laying on your back.

Even an ugly assistant can turn out to be quite handy, if just for a second set of eyes.

Thanks guys maybe i should get a engine lift and take whole engine out. As if it is that hard geting it back in will be harder

Getting it back in can be the difficult bit...... but it can be done !

The 1275 is difficult because the head is bigger, preventing the block from lowering as far to twist the box through 90 deg to clear the steering rack. there is no problem with the smaller engines, once the gearbox has been pulled off the clutch it can be lifted into the car and out through the front door, easier on a 2 door.

You can do it from below - without removing floor etc.

You can but I'd suggest leaving that for the next time.

I did it many times that way - in my youth! Never considered taking the floor out - far too much work...

Me too, but if it was the first time the box had been out in a while, then the cover had to come off anyway so I could bring some pressure to bear on the captive nuts to captivate them again.

Access to the clutch mechanism is easier, and you can operate it from inside the car to see how worn it is.

Unless you have the car on a ramp it's about the only way an assistant can assist.

Of course you will put some grease or Copaslip on the cross member bolts, and know your way around for the next time.
