having followed the advice of the mot monkey, who said primrose was over heating, whipped out the thermostat. However, owing to the sudden on set of winter (it never really left, just defrosted slightly over april -october) i cannot get any real amount of heat from the heater, whilst before it was actually quite good. would the lack of thermostat be causing this?
is so should i just put it back n or wear a thicker coat?

Yes that is what the thermostat is for, to let the engine heat up to the temp of the thermostat rating. Not really a good idea to run without it. Is it overheating? and if yes why?

while the thermostat is out put some rad flush in whit he heater full on.

You must NEVER run the A series engine without a thermostat - your MOT man is indeed a monkey. Only exception is on a full race engine - when a thermostat blanking sleeve can be used instead of a stat. For best heater action get an 88 degree stat in there right away - with anti-freeze.

That's one reason - the other is that the far end of the block/head may actually overheat - since the circulating water will simply run round the front of the block in a 'short circuit'.

Thankfully i havent really driven primrose yet, just to the mot zoo and back. Tbh i didnt think she was overheating, i know the cooling system is as clean as a whistle, so ill pop the thermostat back in and enjoy the warmth from the heater

For even better heater output, fit a 92 degree thermostat! It really warmed mine up...
